Sakaja Explains Why He Skipped Testifying Against Gachagua In Senate

Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja was among the witnesses who was supposed to testify against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the impeachment trial at the Senate that entered it’s second day on Thursday.

In his affidavit, he accused Gachagua of unlawfully interfering with the governing of Nairobi County, citing the incident of relocation of traders from Wakulima market to Kagundo Road Market. Sakaja said that Gachagua held rallies in Nairobi that incited the public against decisions of the county.

On Wednesday, Sakaja was however a no show at the Senate to provide his testimony in person.

It emerged that he was out of the country in Mexico attending the Bloomberg CityLab 2024 summit, where he was one of the key speakers.

He later shared a tweet saying Uhuru Park can’t be booked for events during public holidays. The tweet  attracted netizens attention and they took to the comments section to share their reaction with Sakaja interacting with them.

One of them said that they were were waiting for him in the Senate. In his reason, Sakaja noted that Gachagua’s fate to be kicked out of office was already sealed at there was no need for his testimony

“There is no need to push a car downhill, it’s over,” Sakaja wrote.

Meanwhile, the senate proceeding in the afternoon were postponed to 5pm after DP Gachagua failed to show up after the lunch break.

His lawyer Paul Muite informed the Senate that the embattled second in command had fallen ill and had been rushed to hospital.

Makueni senator Dan Maanzo admitted that DP looked tired before they proceeded for the lunch break.

“The DP just looked tired. He had lunch at his office with some senators from his region and the said he was okau. Everyone was expecting him including his lawyers,” Maanzo said.
