Former Makueni governor Professor Kivutha Kibwana has condemned the violent assault on activist Kebaso Morara during a public participation event at Bomas of Kenya on Friday, October 4, 2024.
In a statement on X, Kibwana called for accountability, demanding that the assailants be brought to justice.
“Those responsible for the assault on Mtumishi Kebaso Morara at Bomas must face justice in court,” he asserted on Monday, October 7, 2024.
“We must uphold the rule of law impartially, or we risk descending into chaos.”
His remarks highlight a growing concern among political leaders and citizens about the increasing political violence in Kenya.
The attack on Morara, known for his vocal criticism of government corruption, has ignited outrage among civil society and young activists.
Many view this incident as part of a troubling trend to silence dissent and undermine democratic principles.
Kibwana also reached out to the younger generation of leaders, particularly those within the Gen Z movement, specifically addressing Kasmuel McOure, also known as Kaskazini.
“@_KasKazini, don’t get distracted. You are the future,” he urged, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their advocacy for justice and accountability.
Kasmuel has faced intensified scrutiny and accusations of betraying his activist roots.
The controversy arose after he was labeled a sellout for his stance on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment, with critics alleging that he neglected to support calls for the ouster of President William Ruto as well.
The tension escalated during the same public participation event at Bomas, where Kasmuel advocated for Gachagua’s removal but failed to address the violent assault on Morara, which occurred in the same setting.
This oversight sparked significant backlash on social media, with many accusing him of prioritizing political rhetoric over the well-being of his fellow activist.
In his speech, where he declared “Gachagua must go,” McOure did not critique President Ruto, further fueling the claims of betrayal.
Some activists, including Morara’s lawyer, Pareno Solonka, took to X, denouncing McOure as a sellout for appearing to align himself with political leaders.
