Busia Man Constructs Underground House Due To Limited Land

A 30 year old man from Marachi in Busia County has become innovative and opted to utilize fully a small piece of land he inherited from his father.

Kevin Onyango constructed his house underground where he lives with his wife and three children.

According to him, the idea to build such a house came to him through a dream. This however brought disputes with his family.

“I talked with my mum, she was angry but she did not stop me because she wished me to have a house,” he told West TV.

His wife was also afraid because she had never seen such a house but he convinced her promising to construct a better structure in future.

“This is where my father told me I will set up my house. I  calculated, I have a family and three children now and we have not put a stop to bearing more children. I though constructing a house down here and another up there will help me because in terms of space, there is no room for expansion,” he said.

Onyango is the second born among 9 children. Two are girls while 7 of them are boys and their family land is too small.

Locals and the area chief have been awed by his technique, but they are afraid of the consequences that it might come with.

“The circulation of air is little in requires modern technology to supply enough air. Secondly, the family might be affected with pneumonia due to the cold at night,” he said.

The father of three says he is not worried about his safety because he believes the idea to build such a home came from God.

Onyango has used a similar technique to construct a shed for his goats. He also rears chicken and ducks in his underground house.
