Inside Journalist Sean Cardovillis’ Cremation: Blow-By-Blow Account Of What Will Happen To His Body

The body of former NTV anchor Sean Cardovillis is set to be burnt down to ashes in a meticulous process.

The late Cardovillis will be cremated today September 14, 2023, at a private family ceremony in Nairobi.

The family emphasized the importance of the public’s understanding and consideration of their need for privacy as they cremate their kin.

According to his family, a memorial service will be held on September 22, 2023, at the Consolata Shrine Catholic Church in Westlands, Nairobi, from 10am.

Even as Cardovillis is cremated, the journalist’s cause of death is yet to be disclosed.

The lifeless body of Sean Cardovillis was discovered by a cleaner on Saturday September 9, 2023.

The veteran Sports journalist was found dead outside his house in Westlands, Nairobi where he lived alone.

So what exactly will happen to Cardovillis’ body during cremation?

There is a lot of process in how a body is prepared for cremation and what happens during the process.

If the deceased or bereaved family chose direct cremation, the body usually stays refrigerated till the cremation. If they chose a public viewing, the body is usually placed in a prep room for embalming.

Embalming is an invasive procedure that involves the injection of chemical solutions into the arteries, tissues and sometimes organs and draining of the deceased’s fluids to slow decomposition and restore the physical appearance of the deceased to give them a more peaceful appearance for viewing.

The body is then prepared for cremation after viewing process. The cremation provider prep the body by removing all jewelry, pacemakers, or medical devices in order to prevent melting or explosions during the cremation process.

Jewelry is returned to the family and medical devices are often recycled or returned to the family.

The body is then placed in a cremation container. Cremation containers can be solid wood caskets designed for cremation or corrugated cardboard boxes also designed for cremations.

The cremation container with the body inside is then put into the cremation chamber and heated between 1400 and 2000 degrees for about two hours.

Some crematories allow family members to view the cremation itself, as per their wish.

After the cremation, the remains are cooled for about an hour and then processed through a machine that grinds remaining bones into powder. These powdered remains are returned to the family in an urn of their choice or in another kind of container.

Often, family members will spread the ashes on a favorite place or, if the deceased person had a spouse who was buried, at the spouse’s gravesite.
