“The atmosphere is not conducive for laughter. Tuko kwa matanga,” Eric Omondi said.
The president of comedy in Africa has banned Kenyan comedians from holding shows within the country for the next one year.
In an interview with Mpasho’s Kalondu Musyimi, Eric said that there is nothing to laugh about since Kenyans are suffering because of the high cost of living.
“Right now we are not doing comedy. There is nothing to laugh about. As the president of comedy, I have been planning to ban/ cancel comedy shows. I want to call upon comedians not to do any more shows because Kenyans hawana…unachekesha nani, nani anataka kucheka, watu hawana rent, hawana food, stima, fuel. Watu wanaumia zile message ziko nikikuonyesha utalia. I want to ban comedy officially for at least one year tusichekeshwe hatutaki kucheka, no events za comedy,” the funny man said.
Instead of laughing, Eric Omondi said that Kenyans should cry so that the government can know they have no strength to laugh.
He added that people are looking for money to buy food and not pay for them to laugh.
“I am calling upon every Kenyan comedians to stop comedy for at least one year. From this July to next year July. Tusiende KICC ama Carnivore kuchekesha watu juu watu hawana pesa ya kucheka. Watu wanatafuta unga. If comedians tushikane si wote no more shows, no more comedy because there is nothing to smile and that’s an order from the president,” he said.
He further said that anyone who goes against the rule will be cancelled as a comedian.
He asked comedians to find other means of making money like use of social media.
“Kuna maujanja hapa Nairobi yenye sisi maartits na macomedians tunaezafanya tupate doh. But I am requesting hio ya Otos ikuwe ya mwisho. Njugush anafanya yake Australia hio ni sawa. You can do outside(the country) but Kenya tusichekeshe watu. Tutakuwa tunaonyesha government wamefurahi,” Eric Omondi said.
