Makena Njeri Emboldened To Fight For The Rights Of Homosexual Community In Kenya After Chiloba’s Death

Makena Njeri wants homosexuals to enjoy their freedom in Kenya without being discriminated or stigmatized.

The LGBTQ+ activist issued a joint statement together with other advocacy groups following the death of Ediwn Chiloba.

“The killing of Edwin Chiloba exposes the rise in Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV), and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) experienced in Kenya. These incidents can be attributed to the absence of strong preventions, weak protection mechanisms for survivors, evasive prosecution of SGBV cases, and an uncoordinated and often reluctant response to SGBV from State and non-state actors.

“The existing legal landscape makes it near impossible for sexual and gender minorities to report cases of IPV, fearing arrest, self-incrimination and further harm. The government should honour its pledge to align Kenya’s legislative and legal environment with international and regional standards on SGBV. We further stress the importance of developing favourable social norms, attitudes, and behaviors at institutional, community, and individual levels to prevent and respond to SGBV.

“We additionally call on the National and County Governments to improve the quality of essential SGBV services for all its constituents without prejudice,” the joint statement read in part.

On her part, Makena Njeri stressed that she will continue to condemn the hate LGBT+ persons face in Kenya.

“I stand with @boldnetworkafrica @galck_ke @amnesty_kenya @change.orgke @nglhrckenya @inend.ke @q_initiative on this statement.

“I will continue condemning the hate LGBTQ+ persons face in this country we call home. I will call it exactly what it is without any fear. I move with LOVE only ❤️,” Makena Njeri wrote.
