The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has officially accredited 25 teacher training colleges to offer the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) program.
This two-year program aims to equip future primary school educators with the necessary skills, knowledge, and adaptability to meet Kenya’s evolving educational demands.
A Rigorous Training Program
The DPTE program, examined by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC), is designed to produce well-rounded and competent teachers for both public and private primary schools in Kenya.
These educators, commonly referred to as P1 teachers, undergo extensive training in languages, mathematics, child development, psychology, human rights, and school administration to enhance curriculum delivery.
Beyond preparing students for classroom teaching, the diploma also serves as a stepping stone for further studies in education.
Graduates can advance to a Diploma in Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and eventually pursue Master’s and Doctoral studies.
Entry Requirements
To enroll in the DPTE program, candidates must have a minimum mean grade of C (plain) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent.
However, applicants with disabilities are eligible with a slightly lower minimum requirement of C- (minus) in KCSE.
