10 Lavish Benefits Gachagua Will No Longer Enjoy After His Impeachment As Deputy President

Following his unprecedented impeachment, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces the loss of numerous luxurious benefits, privileges, and perks associated with his office.

These perks, funded by Kenyan taxpayers, were designed to support the country’s second-in-command during and after their tenure.

Here’s a look at the 10 most notable benefits Gachagua has lost:

1. Lifetime Pension

Gachagua was entitled to 80% of his last monthly salary as a lifetime pension after leaving office. With a monthly salary of Ksh1.2 million, this equated to Ksh951,240 per month, now completely revoked following his impeachment.

2. Lump Sum Payment

Upon retirement, the Deputy President would receive a one-time lump sum payment equal to one year’s salary for each term served.

For Gachagua, this meant forfeiting Ksh14.4 million, a significant financial setback.

3. Luxury Vehicle Entitlement

Gachagua has lost access to a fleet of vehicles, including two luxury saloon cars with engines not exceeding 2000cc and a four-wheel-drive vehicle with an engine capacity of up to 3000cc.

These cars, replaced every four years and maintained at taxpayer expense, are no longer available to him.

4. Fuel Allowance

Alongside the official vehicles, Gachagua enjoyed a fuel allowance worth 15% of his salary.

This allowance, covering personal and official transportation costs, is another of the luxurious perks that he no longer has access to.

5. Personal Staff

As Deputy President, Gachagua was entitled to a team of 16 staff members, including personal assistants, drivers, cooks, housekeepers, gardeners, and security guards.

This team was crucial in maintaining his daily comfort and security, all of which has now been stripped away.

6. Diplomatic Passports

Gachagua and his spouse enjoyed diplomatic passports, granting them diplomatic privileges during travel, such as expedited clearance and access to special services.

These benefits are now gone, a significant blow for international travel and status.

7. VIP Access at Airports

Gachagua had access to VIP lounges at all Kenyan airports and during international travel.

This privilege, which offered special services, comfort, and privacy, has now been withdrawn.

8. Government-Funded Security

As Deputy President, Gachagua had round-the-clock armed security detail at his disposal.

With his impeachment, he no longer enjoys the level of protection and security afforded to top government officials, losing personal bodyguards and security for his residence.

9. Office and Official Equipment

Gachagua had access to a fully staffed office, including office equipment, communication devices, and secretarial support.

This official workspace was part of his entitlements as Deputy President but is no longer available to him.

10. Medical Coverage for Life

Upon retirement, the Deputy President is usually entitled to government-funded medical insurance for life, covering him and his spouse.

This benefit has now disappeared, leaving Gachagua without the comprehensive healthcare package he would have enjoyed post-office.

The impeachment marks not only the end of Gachagua’s tenure but also the removal of privileges that reflected his high office and the prestige of being Kenya’s Deputy President.

His political future remains uncertain, but these losses underscore the far-reaching implications of his fall from power.
